CHILDCARE students from Dearne Valley College showed their caring side with some fun fundraising.

They potted over £160 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice by organising a tombola, name the teddy, guess how many sweets in a jar, a bun sale, nail painting, and by asking students to wear blue in return for a donation.

Staff and fellow students at the Wath-based college were asked to dig deep for the hospice, that aims to give children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy the chance to relax, take a break and have fun, while support is extended to the whole family.

A spokeswoman for DVC Childcare and Education said: “This event was suggested by the students, who then prepared and carried it out independently and wholeheartedly. I am very proud of their effort which was supported by staff and students and in return has raised money for a worthwhile cause”.

For most of this month catering and hospitality students have been preparing, cooking and serving four-course lunches including coffee at their own Griffin Restaurant.

Using locally sourced, fresh produce the students have served up Highland-themed menus to include delights such as; Highland soup, smoked Scottish fishcakes , spiced Scottish salmon or medallions of venison. Dessert options have included Christmas pudding and whiskey sauce to be finished off with coffee or tea served with mints. Vegetarian options were also available.

The Griffin is open to the public, staffed by catering and hospitality students gaining working experience.

But the college is not the only educational hub to be successful with catering courses.

Over the last term Y11 Hospitality students at the Dearne ALC opened a special café to serve staff and get feed-back as part of their customer service unit.

They made and presented their own meals and snacks, and were congratulated on their professional approach.

Dearne Valley College is now accepting applications for September 2012. Open Evenings are on January 24, February 22 and March 22.
