Step right up for Doncaster's Midsummer Walk
Residents are being encouraged to put their best foot forward to raise cash for Doncaster's oldest charity at a Midsummer Walk.
Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust’s Midsummer Walk will see residents take on an 11 mile trek from Doncaster to Thorne to raise cash for the charity that help fund equipment and facilities for cancer sufferers in the borough.
Thorne Lions are working with the charity to organise this year’s event that will take place on Sunday June 26 starting from outside Cast Theatre in Sir Nigel Gresley Square.
A spokesman for the Lions said: “In the international Lions centenary year, Thorne Lions in conjunction with Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust have organised the Midsummer Walk to help raise a million pounds towards the cost of a scanning equipment and a new treatment Suite at Doncaster Royal Infirmary so people needing radiotherapy do not have to travel to Sheffield.
“The walk can be done in three stages starting at the Cast Theatre, followed by the first official stop at Wheatly Hotel, the second official stop at Hatfield on Ash Hill then onto H.M.S. Gambia Thorne.
“Please come and join this very worthwhile cause.”
The Midsummer Walk replaced the popular autumn Midnight Walk, which was held for four years, back in 2012.
Fancy dress for the event is optional and those wanting to take part are asked to sign up as soon as possible.
Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust (DCT) starting fundraising for a one-off piece of equipment in 1971 eventually led to the formation of the charity in 1972.
44 years later the charity has raised over £12 million to help fund equipment and facilities for cancer sufferers in Doncaster.
