A terrified shopkeeper fled a masked gunman who burst into a Sheffield newsagents and leapt over the counter.

The gunman barged into Basegreen News, on Jaunty Way in Basegreen, and jumped over the counter to steal cash from the till and cigarettes.

A frightened member of staff – who was alone in the shop – was threatened by the robber who demanded cash.

The quick-thinking employee escaped the raider by fleeing into the back store room and out of a back door. The male worker ran to the front of the shop and called police who sent armed officers to the Basegreen estate.

But within minutes the gunmen had fled the scene and police are now hunting the suspect.

The manager of Basegreen News, who did not want to be named, said the man stole about £150 from the till and packets of cigarettes he managed to grab from behind the counter before running off.

He said: “This man came into the shop with a mask on and he was holding something by his waist.

“My staff member ran. He ran out the back and round the front and called the police.

“He was so panicked he couldn’t even remember if it was a knife or a gun but people outside said it was a gun.”

The newsagents was closed yesterday but plucky staff said they would try to reopen over the weekend.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police are carrying out enquiries following a reported armed robbery at a newsagents in the Basegreen area of Sheffield.

“At around 12.10pm Thursday January 7 it is reported that a man with his face covered entered Basegreen News in Jaunty Way.

“The man is alleged to have threatened staff with what is believed to be a gun, demanding money.

“An amount of cash was taken before the suspect ran from the store in the direction of Jaunty Way.

“Nobody was injured during the incident.

“Did you see anything suspicious in the area yesterday afternoon? Did you witness the robbery?”
