A campaign has been launched to help save working men’s and social clubs – including those in the Gazette area – from closing.
So far more than 2,000 people across the globe have joined his online group. He has received the backing of several clubs in the borough.
Mr Whitaker, 43, concert secretary of Intake Social Club, says recent legislation including the smoking ban and increased tax on alcohol – compounded by people staying in drinking cheap supermarket booze – is forcing clubs to close.
He said: “We’re not sitting back and being quiet on these issues. We need help.”
