Results day celebrations for Doncaster students

Students in Doncaster were jumping for joy after notching up A-level results above the national average.

An impressive 99.4 per cent of Doncaster students achieved one A-level pass or more, exceeding the national average of 98.1 per cent.

Figures for the number of students achieving grade A and above have increased by 1.3 per cent to 19.9 per cent but that is still slightly below the national average.

Doncaster’s biggest sixth form, Hall Cross, which has 500 six formers, reported its best-ever results in the exams.

Vice principal Simon Swain said: “It has been our best results ever. I think we have recruited some excellent teachers in the last few years.

“Pupils working hard has been fundamental, and the school has also created the ethos to make that happen.”

Just over 75 per cent of the school’s grades were at A* to C, and 99.6 per cent of students achieved a pass grade.

The overall pass rate at Trinity Academy was 97 per cent with 41 per cent of all grades being a B or better. Almost 20 per cent of all grades were A* or A.

This year’s A-level students were the first cohort to spend two full years in the academy’s new £1.2 million sixth form centre.

Meanwhile, pupils at McAuley Catholic High School were praised for their outstanding results.

Mr Shenton, head of sixth form, said: “Today is the culmination of two years of hard work and dedication by both the staff and students of the school.

“We are extremely pleased that the vast majority of our university applicants have secured places at their preferred choice of university including some of the world’s leading institutions such as Oxbridge, the Royal Northern College of Music and the US Ivy League.”

It was all smiles at Ridgewood School where the vast majority of students secured their first choice of university place.

Straight A grades were achieved by Ridgewood pupils Charlotte Green, Jacques Kenyon, Abi Pawlett, Alexander Shaw, Lewis Houghton and Megan Maloney.

In Balby Carr’s sixth form, head teacher John Innes said initial analysis suggested every indicator was up on last year.

The numbers of students achieving the Department of Education’s minimum average points score standard increased by 30 per cent, from 57 per cent to 87 per cent.

The number of students achieving three A-level passes has increased 12 per cent to 48 per cent while the increase in those gaining the equivalent of three A-levels in vocational courses has leapt from 62 per cent to 80 per cent.

Students and staff at De Warenne Academy were celebrating their best-ever Year 13 results.

Notable successes included Adam Davies who achieved A* grades in mathematics and physics and Josh Taylor who gained grade A in both mathematics and physics.

Vice principal Andrew Hay said: “We are delighted with these excellent results, they are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our students and staff at De Warenne Academy, and in our partnership academies.”

Students at Outwood Academy Adwick achieved outstanding results.

Sir Michael Wilkins, academy principal and chief executive of Outwood Grange Academies Trust, said: “Our students have achieved excellent results, securing a 99 per cent A*-E pass rate, with 58 per cent of entries achieving an A-level A*-B grade or equivalent, and an incredible 44 per cent of all entries achieving an A*-A or equivalent.

“It is testament to the hard work of all students, their families, staff, the trust board and governors at Outwood Academy Adwick that we have yet again performed so well.”

Students at Hill House School notched up a record pass rate of 99 per cent with 47 per cent of exams graded at A* to B, with 74 per cent graded at C or above.

Danum Academy headteacher Rebecca Staples was thrilled with the results at her school.

She said: “As ever we are so proud of the students. They have worked so hard and done so well.

“Every year you well up thinking of all the hard work and effort they put in.”

Danum student CJ Flynn, aged 19, achieved three As and a B and is going on to study English and Philosophy at Leeds or Durham.

He said: “I was so nervous about today – I’ve only had about 45 minutes sleep. I felt like the exams had gone horribly so it’s a massive relief.

“I’ve got in at Leeds but I’m going to ring Durham to see if I can get a place there.”

Councillor Nuala Fennelly, cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said: “These are encouraging results and I want to congratulate all the students and schools for achieving such great marks.

“All of their hard work and dedication has paid off and they should be very proud of what they have achieved.

“I wish them all every success as they continue with their studies or start a career.”
