Two people were rescued from their burning home in the early hours of the morning.

Arsonists are believed to have set fire to a sofa outside the property on Railway View, Goldthorpe.

A neighbour raised the alarm and fire crews from Dearne Station rushed to the scene at 3.30am on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus battled through smoke to help the occupants, two woman aged in their 20s, to get out of the house.

Neither required medical treatment.

A fire service spokesman said the fire did not spread to the house but smoke seeped through into the downstairs area.
