Production re-starts at mining death colliery

DONCASTER-BASED UK Coal has this lunchtime confirmed production has recommenced at a pit where a miner was killed.

The company said a build up to full coal production at Kellingley Colliery would take place over the next week following the death of Gerry Gibson.

Mr Gibson, 49, died on Tuesday when a roof collapsed at the mine in North Yorkshire. A colleague was also injured but survived.

UK Coal, which has its headquarters in Harworth, said it would publish its own findings into Tuesday’s incident. The Health and Safety Executive has also launched a probe.

Mr Gibson’s death was the third in four years at the site.

A memorial service has taken place to mark the deaths of miners at Kellingley Colliery.
