TAXPAYERS have had to shell out £500,000 to fund council mobile phones and other gadgets, it has been revealed.
The shock figure comes as Doncaster Council considers making more workers redundant.
Mayor Peter Davies believes it is “appalling” that the authority is paying hundreds of thousands of pounds in rental fees and bills for BlackBerries, mobile phones and laptops.
Fifty councillors and officers have BlackBerries, but only eight councillors put their mobile numbers on the council website for people to contact them.
Mr Davies questioned why councillors were not using their annual allowances of a minimum of £12,000 to pay for the devices.
