Last year Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to built 40 new hospitals by 2030 as part of “the biggest hospital building programme in a generation”. The locations of where the hospitals will be built have yet to be revealed.

In January Mr Hancock said there was a “strong case” for a new hospital in Doncaster during a visit to the Royal Infirmary Hospital. Parts of the hospital date back to the 1930s, and it has been estimated it has a backlog of urgent repairs running into a cost of around £50 million.

Last year hospital bosses said they were looking into the possibility of building a new hospital, rather than run a series of repairs and upgrades.

In a joint statement, Dame Rosie Winterton and Mr Miliband MP said: “Doncaster residents deserve a hospital fit for the twenty-first century, a point we have been making for some years. The Prime Minister promised 40 new hospitals so it’s absolutely right that Doncaster should benefit from this.

“Health professionals in Doncaster have been incredibly impressive in recent months responding to the coronavirus crisis. They should be able to work in equally impressive, state of the art, facilities.”

Nick Fletcher, the Conservative MP for Don Valley, has also made a case to the Health Secretary for a new hospital in Doncaster.
