Former miner Paul lives in a council flat on the Balby Bridge estate and was forced out of his flat last week after water poured in from the apartment above him, where there was a damaged heating pipe at Elsworth Close.

It was the worst damage he’d seen yet at his home due to water coming from the flat above, which he says has happened five times, including once when thieves took metal piping. Several people have lived in the flat above over that period.

Now he just wants to move, but says he is having problems with the computer system which St Leger Homes uses for applications, which won't accept his national insurance number.

The damage left him out of pocket as he has no insurance to cover damage to his carpets and belongings.

He said: “When the water started pouring down from above it was like a scene from Titanic.

"I’ve had enough. I can’t live here with an umbrella above my head.

"I think the place needs gutting now, not just a few small repairs.

"They’ve brought in dehumidifiers to dry the place out. The air feels as dry as the Sahara now.”

Warehouse worker Paul, aged 63, who is diabetic, had to move out for a week, but has moved back in. He says it smells as a result of the water.

Steve Waddington, director of housing and customer services at St Leger Homes, said: “On Wednesday February 17, 2021, we were informed of a leak in a flat on the Balby Bridge estate. We attended approximately one hour later and discovered the leak was caused by a damaged heating pipe which we were then able to repair.

“The occupant of the flat below was offered hotel accommodation but this was declined. The following day we again offered alternative temporary accommodation until the flat had dried out and this time the tenant accepted the offer.

“We have now made the electrics safe and restored power to the property. Our Doncaster HomeChoice Team have also been in contact with the tenant to assist with their application to find alternative housing, should they wish to pursue this option."
