A charity fundraiser is calling on residents to stride ahead and join him on organised walks in Doncaster.

Tommy Joyce, who was awarded the MBE for raising more than £200,000 for charity through his marathon runs, wants to organise weekly strolls around the area.

The 67-year-old former school caretaker said he wants to give Mexborough people something positive to do following a number of setbacks recently which has seen two supermarket developments scrapped with huge job losses.

Mr Joyce, of Maple Road, Mexborough, said: “Everyone seems to be a bit down in the dumps so I want to give people something positive to do to help to keep their heads up.”

A developer recently axed plans to build a new supermarket in Station Road close to Mexborough Railway Station with the loss of a further 250 potential jobs.

In addition, Tesco announced they are closing the Metro store in the High Street on April 4, with 55 job losses.

The walks would take place every Sunday morning for a few miles around Mexborough. Anyone interested can ring Mr Joyce on 01709 584339.
