Prime Minister Boris Johnson shares special Yorkshire Day message

Yorkshire Day is marked on August 1 each year and acts to celebrate all the amazing things that ‘God’s Own County’ has to offer – from its luscious scenic moors and national parks to historical ruins and archaeological delights.

It originally started back in 1975 as a protest against local government re-organisation but over the years has morphed into a day where Yorkshiremen and women get together and enjoy a large amount of traditional Yorkshire food, including the famous Yorkshire puddings amongst other things, and remind each other of just how great the county is.

Dozens of people have taken to social media to share their love for Yorkshire today including the Prime Minister who appeared to remark on what is a staple of the county, the famous Yorkshire Tea brand.

Posting on Twitter this afternoon, the PM said: “Yorkshire - the home of Yorkshire tea, the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and some of the friendliest people in the UK. Have a fantastic Yorkshire Day everybody!”

His message comes just a day after the government imposed strict new lockdown measures on parts of West Yorkshire after a surge in coronavirus infection rates.

This year’s official Yorkshire Day civic celebrations had been due to take place in Rotherham but, due to the pandemic, a virtual event was held instead.

Although typically celebrated by those in Yorkshire, many people outside of the county and even globally now recognise and celebrate the day.
