More than £100,000 of illegal booze and fags have been seized in Doncaster in the run-up to Christmas.

Doncaster Council has been behind the blitz, clamping down on smugglers and suppliers of illegal cigarettes and alcohol from businesses across the borough.

The haul includes around 9,000 packets of cigarettes, 200 bottles of spirits and more than 4,000 cans of beer.

The goods were seized from shops across the town for a variety of offences - including more than 3,000 cans of beer from one shop alone.

The seizures follow an increase in the number of illicit cigarettes and alcohol brands for sale across Doncaster. The Council’s Trading Standards and Environmental Health teams joined forces to tackle the problem and, with funding from Public Health, dedicated officers have been appointed to investigate the growing issue.

Head of service for Environmental Protection, Karen Hanson revealed the haul to Coun Joe Blackham, cabinet member for community safety, showing him the holding room where the illicit goods are kept. He witnessed first-hand the success of the teams.

Coun Blackham said: “The sheer number of seizures that Trading Standards has undertaken shows just how committed we are to making sure local businesses are trading within the boundaries of the law, and with a sense of responsibility for the local community.

“Every business that tries to undercut others by buying illegal, counterfeit or non-duty paid goods from abroad does the whole local economy no favours at all.
