Doncaster men best in country for health screening

Men over 65 in Doncaster who have taken up a health screening programme have done so in greater numbers than anywhere else in the country.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening on men in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw is the best in the UK according to figures for 2013-14.

The figure saw 2,220 men over 65 self-referred for screening. With the total for the entire north of England at 5,559 self-referrals, the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw men accounted for well over a third of the figures for the region and also came out top for the whole of the UK.

An AAA occurs when the main blood vessel in the body, the aorta, weakens and expands. If left untreated the swelling can lead to a rupture and a serious risk of death from internal bleeding.

The condition, which carries few, if any symptoms, kills around 6,000 people a year – mainly older men aged 65 and above.

However a five minute ultrasound scan can detect AAAs and potentially save lives. Men in their 65th year are invited for screening by a letter, but over 65s are required to self-refer onto the programme.

Since 2014 Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been commissioned to provide the NHS AAA Screening Programme across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.
