To estimate the gender breakdown of street names, Holiday Cottages scraped the names of 214,757 streets from Britain’s 50 most populated cities/ urban areas from Streetlist.co.uk.
Each street name was categorised into ‘male’, ‘female’ or ‘non-gendered’.
The analysis did not take into consideration the historical reasons for streets being named as they are, therefore there will be plenty of surnames that are not categorised with a gender, but which may actually be named after a man or women by using their surname.
