A sports group that maintains and funds a sports ground for the Barnby Dun and Kirk Sandall community has received a major cash boost.

Barnby Dun and Kirk Sandall Sports Association were awarded £1000 from Persimmon Homes Yorkshire.

Volunteers will use the generous donation to help fund new sight screens for its cricket pitch, permanent outdoor seating and covers for the cricket wickets.

The community group maintains the grounds on a daily basis and is home to Barnby Dun Cricket Club, which was founded in 1870.

The group received the money from Persimmon Homes Yorkshire as part of the house builder’s Community Champions project, which will see a pot of £24,000 being donated to local groups and charities over the next 12 months in the region.

Peter Fell, chairman of the Barnby Dun Cricket Club, said the cash boost will give the club a new lease of life for generations to come.

He said: “We are so pleased that Persimmon Homes Yorkshire has chosen to support us.

“This donation means that we can buy essential new sight screens, outdoor seating and covers for cricket wickets which will really improve our facilities.”

Two groups will now be chosen every month to receive a donation and Yorkshire-based charities are being encouraged to apply by completing an online form at

Kevin Thubron, sales director at Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, said the community initiative is a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company operates.

He added: “We are very proud to hand over our first donation to Barnby Dun and Kirk Sandall Sports Association and would like to wish the Cricket teams the very best of luck for this season.”

The Persimmon Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves.

Nationwide the company will donate a total of £750,000.

The firm has recently begun work on a brand new housing development in Bessacarr.

It has started work on further sites in Scunthorpe, Selby, Hull, Norton, North Hykeham and York.
