Don Your Way: Who's sick to death of the dreaded lurgy and cough and cold bugs?

That’s just about all of you then.

I don’t think I’ve ever known a winter season as bad as this one for germs, bugs and all the rest of it flying about.

I’ve been under the weather with one kind of thing or another since early December – the aching joints, the snuffling nose, the violent hacking cough – which seems to have infected just about everyone I know over the course of the last few months or so.

Fortunately, I've not fallen victim to the man flu and have soldiered on throughout the worst of it, although I was feeling so lousy one day I was ruled out of the annual office Christmas party.

The bedside table has been stacked high with Night Nurse, cold and flu remedies, tissues and my other half has been force feeding me oranges and orange juice to keep my vitamin C levels topped up.

There’s nights when the cough has forced me to decamp to the sofa in search of a decent night’s kip and my cough was so bad one day that a fellow passenger on the train was glaring at me like I was going to pass on some nasty, unimaginable communicable disease to her.

Through all this, I’ve pretty much managed to stay away from the doctor – there’s already enough strain on the NHS without timewasters rocking up at A&E or demanding their GP do something more for what’s essentially just a cough or cold.

Yes, its annoying, yes its long-lingering and yes, its a damn pain in the erm, nose and throat, but paracetamol, honey and lemon, fluids and plenty of rest are your friends in these situations, not a seat in your local doctor’s waiting room.

I’m just about through the other side of it now, thankfully, and have gradually started clearing the medicine bottles and packets back to their drawer for the next time.

So if you’re suffering, I feel your pain. It will go. Eventually.
