Our light-hearted story yesterday about Doncaster being the worst place to live clearly touched a nerve with some readers.

Despite pointing out our tongue was firmly in cheek, some of you were upset by our choices - so now we’ve come up with 11 reasons why Doncaster is the BEST place to live.

1. We’ve got the best markets in Britain

If you can’t find it on Donny market, then you can’t find it anywhere, goes the old adage. From fresh fruit and veg to fish, meat, clothes, books, household items, gardening gear and toiletries and everything else you could ever think of, there’s no finer place in the UK to grab a bargain.

2. The transport links are amazing

We’re on the East Coast Main line, so places like London, Edinburgh, York, Leeds and Newcastle are within easy reach. And Robin Hood Airport is growing each day, bringing us more destinations across the globe right on our doorstep. And with the M18, A1(M) and M1 all close by, getting around is easy.

3. The shops are fantastic

There are hundreds of great shops - all the leading High Street names as well as loads of wonderful independent stores - everything from trendy fashion boutiques to quaint gift stores and some fantastic cafes and places to eat out too.

4. We’re home to one of the world’s greatest sporting events

The St Leger has been run in Doncaster since 1776 and since then, thousands of racing enthusiasts have descended on Doncaster for a dose of good old fashioned Yorkshire hospitality as well as the thrills and spills of the Sport of Kings.

5. We’ve given the world some star names

England football boss Kevin Keegan, TV host Jeremy Clarkson, acting sensation Sheridan Smith, One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, booming Brian Blessed and a host of other star names all hail from round these parts and are proud to call it home.

6. The sporting scene is incredible

You’ve got a great mix of sports teams to be proud of in Doncaster - Doncaster Rovers have had enormous success in the last decade, Doncaster Belles have recently been promoted and Doncaster Knights and Doncaster Rugby League Club have put the town on the map too.

7. We built the world’s most famous locomotives

They are the world’s most famous steam icons - and they were both built in Doncaster. The Flying Scotsman and Mallard were both conceived and created at the Plant Works - and our proud railway heritage continues today. making Doncaster a key UK rail hub.

8. Our heritage is brilliant

Take a look around at some of our fabulous old buildings - the Mansion House, Cusworth Hall, Brodsworth Hall, Conisbrough Castle and Roche Abbey - just some of the beautiful architectural gems we can be proud of in and around Doncaster.

9. We’ve got the world’s last flying Vulcan bomber

She might not be taking to the air anymore, but we can still boast the world’s last flying Vulcan bomber. XH558, a true iconic aircraft which has thrilled millions of aviation enthusiasts across the globe and which will now be permanently based here.

10. You can’t beat a night out in Donny

People come from miles around for Doncaster’s legendary nightlife - it has the reputation as one of the north’s great party towns and for decades, revellers have enjoyed all that the town’s night time scene has to fofer.

11. The people

What makes a town? The people who live there of course - and Doncaster has got some of the best in the world. There’s nothing more reassuring than to return to town after spending time in another part of the world and feeling the warmth of Yorkshire folk once more.
