PAUL DICKOV COLUMN: I want a team that will make you proud

I spoke recently about keeping people’s feet on the ground and keeping people calm ahead of the new season but I must admit I’ve been climbing the walls this week!

It has been a great pre-season but over the last week to ten days, when you can see that start line, I’ve been buzzing.

I know the players are too. They were as bright as a button in training yesterday and we’re all raring to go.

I’ve just got to calm myself down now, never mind the players!

Like I say pre-season has ran smoothly. I’m almost waiting for a spanner to be chucked into the works.

But what it has done is that it has enabled us to get a settled squad together.

Very early we were able to start working on how we want to play with and without the ball, mostly without it.

I think people can see that there’s a structure behind how we want to play, especially when we’re out of possession.

When you’ve got a load of trialists, or people out of contract, and you’re trying to sign players it’s very difficult to do that because things are changing from day to day.

At least this year that’s something we’ve been able to focus on, particularly being hard to play against. Last year and the season before we were probably a bit too nice to play against.

With players like Richie Wellens, James Coppinger, Harry Forrester and Richard Chaplow, we’ll always create chances so it’s important we’re difficult to play against.

There’s lots of things to improve on from last season and even if we get the result we want on Saturday that will remain the case.

The one thing I’ve stressed to this group is that you have to keep pushing yourself and your teammates.

The home form is obviously something we need to get right and this weekend we’re looking for a performance, but first and foremost we’re looking for a lot of attitude and desire from the players.

If we get that, we’ll get a result.

What I’d like to say to you is back the boys.

The support you’ve given us - especially the Black Bank - over pre-season has been phenomenal and the players really appreciate it.

Stick with us because what I want to do, and what the players want to do, is have a team out there that you can all be proud of.
