Recovering drink and drug users are to take part in a sports themed carnival in a Doncaster park.

Following on from the success of last year’s Recovery Games, the Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust Drug and Alcohol Services team is organising a ‘Recovery Carnival’ in town next month.

The all-day event on Saturday, September 6, at Sandall Park, Doncaster, will celebrate mutual aid and recovery, aim to reduce stigma, and raise money for Aurora Cancer Charity.

The day aims to promote abstinence-based recovery from drugs and alcohol, increase access to abstinence-based treatment, and help sustain addiction-free recovery. Organisers also hope to reach out to those still suffering with addiction who may fear accessing treatment.

Designed to be family friendly and fun, the event will include activities and attractions such as team events like tug of war, a space hopper relay and a ‘lob a welly’ competition, as well as guest speakers and music from local bands.

Service manager Stuart Green said: “The event will bring together local communities, families, carers and friends to raise awareness of mutual aid and peer-led support networks. We want to demonstrate not only that there is a life after drugs, but also that recovery is infectious and motivating.”

Groups taking part include Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, Support 4 Change, SMART Recovery, GLOW, mentors and volunteers from Doncaster Drug and Alcohol Services and New Directions.
