Hide AdOut of the 49 people that commented a yes or no answer on our post, 36 disagreed with the petition – 73 per cent.
Many of those who do not think that driving instructors should have this new power thought so due to the danger of new drivers on roads.
David Peter Mole, said: “As a qualified, albeit not working anymore, driving instructor, I think this is a spectacularly bad idea.”
Reader Lisa Kerrigan agreed.
She said: “No because even if they are confident and the instructors think they are ready does not mean that they will pass and be confident out on the open road alone.”

However 13 people agreed with the idea – many of who are currently attempting to pass their driving test.
This was 27 per cent of the overall vote.
Sheralea Hendry said: “I know it’s not an emergency when we’re in a pandemic but people are losing out on jobs and opportunities in life due to not passing their test.
“They keep getting cancelled and then it’s costing a fortune to continue lessons until you can get in again.”

Some readers offered alternative suggestions.
Allison Susan Mycock, said: “It should be with a different instructor, not the one who taught you, as they will look at you driving differently.”
Mark Pearson, said: “The government should extend theory test periods, as learners who passed their theory have lost a substantial amount of time in which to pass their practical.”
