An open letter from new Doncaster Rovers vice chairman Andrew Watson
As I have taken up the role of vice chairman of Doncaster Rovers, I thought I would take this opportunity to quickly introduce myself to those that don't know me.
Firstly I am delighted and proud to have been given this role and am focussed on delivering success and enjoyment to all those involved with the running of the club and most importantly to you, the fans.
This also applies to ourselves, the owners and directors of the club, who as fans were bitterly disappointed with the end to last season. We all want a smile on our faces again and will do all we can in the summer to deliver promotion next season.
The football management team is aware of our aspirations and Darren has begun the task of assembling a highly competitive squad.
I have lived in Doncaster for 45 of my 47 years and was educated at Edlington Comprehensive, followed by three years at Leeds University studying Civil Engineering.
One of my first Rovers memories was watching David Harle, a former Edlington pupil, score the winning goal against QPR in the FA Cup third round in 1985.
I used to play at a very mediocre level for the Edlington school football team and Tickhill Rovers, centre back being my position due to a distinct lack of pace.
My son, Archie, is an avid Rovers fan and trains and plays with the Under 10s pre-academy squad.
I have been involved with Rovers in an official capacity since 2008 when I first became a director and now feel the time is right to take a step up to the vice chairman position. One of the key roles I will be undertaking is to liaise with supporters and associated groups including the Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club, the VSC and the DRSG and I am in the process of setting up meetings with representatives of each.
Clear communication between the club, its board and its supporters is vitally important in understanding each other’s wants, goals and ambitions. It is also key that we as a board convey our passion to succeed on and off the pitch.
Finally I would like to thank all the staff within the club who work tirelessly to endorse and promote the Football Club and Club Doncaster and whose
efforts off the pitch are reaping great rewards and commendation throughout the Football League and beyond. We all now need to concentrate efforts to emulate that success on the pitch.
Here’s to a successful 2016/17 season.
