HE’S already had a taste of being part of a record-breaking single after One Direction’s debut hit raced to the top of the download charts.

And now boyband member Louis Tomlinson is celebrating topping the official charts after the pop quintet’s song ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ sold 153,000 records becoming the biggest seller of 2011 - a record previously held by soul superstar Adele.

The delighted Bessacarr singer celebrated Sunday’s news with his mum Jay, 38, friends and bandmates Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik in London before ending up at their plush flats bought by music mogul manager Simon Cowell.

And on their way to the Radio One studios to find out where they had come in the charts the five-piece, who came third in television programme The X-Factor last year, had to detour to a secret location because of health and safety concerns as hundreds of fans gathered outside.

“It’s still all very surreal, I couldn’t believe it when we found out and to have a record-breaking debut single is phenomenal,” said the 19-year-old former Hall Cross pupil.

“It’s really amazing, the support we’ve had from our fans has been out of this world because they’ve patiently waited for a year for us to bring out a single.

“But we’re so happy with how it has turned out. I really think we’ve hit our sound in this song and I’m really happy with it.

“Simon (Cowell) hasn’t been in touch yet but I’m sure he will. He’s been really great with us, we’ve been allowed to get involved with the single and in the studio we’ve been able to put our own sound to our songs.”

Despite the new song breaking records, their single has been knocked from the number one spot by rapper and N-Dubz frontman Dappy with his debut solo single ‘No Regrets’.

However Louis, formerly of Stoops Lane, says the group is now gearing up for their album release on November 21.

“I’m really proud of the album and am excited for it to come out, I hope the fans like it,” he said.

Despite living a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, travelling the globe, having a collection of celebrity friends including funnyman James Corden and over 400,000 fans on Twitter, Louis still manages to watch the show which shot him to instant fame.

He particularly likes the new-look judging panel of Take That’s Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos and Westlife manager Louis Walsh.

He added: “I love The X-Factor, it’s crazy to watch it having been on it but I am really enjoying it. I love the judges, I think people were sceptical of the change but I think it works really well.

“I like Frankie Cocozza (a contestant this year). He’s got a good voice and a great look. I’m also supporting my friend John Adams who was in the show last year and has made it through to bootcamp this time around.”
