Councillor John Briggs, Mayor of North Lincolnshire said: “I am delighted by the level of support from local businesses with many new ones on board this year. I’d like to welcome Britcon, Road Traffic Solutions, Know Media and National Online Safety to the Community Champion Awards family. They join sponsors that have been with us since the beginning. Without the support of our sponsors the Community Champion Awards wouldn’t be the success it is today so I would like to say a big thank you to each and every one of them.
“If you know an individual or group that deserves a Community Champion Award, make sure you nominate them. Whether it is a personal achievement, inspiration to others, the work they have done in their community or volunteering their services for a good cause, we want to hear from you.
“We are always blown away by the courage, selflessness and determination shown by all nominees. It is truly amazing to be able to hear all the great stories of people in North Lincolnshire every year.”
Winners receive a trophy and certificate, and runners-up receive a certificate.
Since the council’s Community Champion Awards started nearly seven years ago over 130 awards have been given out.
The closing date for nominations is 30 September 2018. For more details about the Community Champion Awards, visit www.northlincs.gov.uk/champion.
Dawn Adams Da Costa, winner of Services to School Governance Award 2017 said “I was born in North Lincolnshire and I think it’s a fabulous place to be and to live. To be able to do this and publicly celebrate what people are doing, I just think is fabulous.”
Mike L’Angellier and Jim Cassidy, winners of Adult Male Volunteer Award 2017 said: “A couple of old gardeners didn’t expect to win something like this. The other people in the nomination sounded far more deserving.”
Scunthorpe and Glanford Canoe Club, winners of Community Sports Team of the Year 2017 said: “It’s not about coming first I think it’s about being put forward. If the outcome was second, we would have been as happy as we are now.”
Rowan Tierney, winner of Young Carer of the Year Award 2017 said: “It’s really impressive and inspirational. The amount of good that people do in the community that you don’t even hear about all the time. So it’s quite nice for a night like this where they do have a moment where they can be appreciated.”
