New smoke alarm scheme launched

DEARNE residents are being urged to sign up to a fire safety scheme which reminds you to check your smoke alarms work.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service warned that householders are four times more likely to die in a house fire without a smoke alarm and each year about 90 people die in the Uk because the battery was flat or missing.

The service is now offering a new scheme in which they send you a reminder to check your smoke alarm works.

A spokesperson said: “We know how hard it is to remember to test your smoke alarms. That’s why we’ve made it easy for you.

“Sign-up up to our Press The Button free reminder service and we’ll send you a free reminder once a week or once a month- it’s up to you. It only takes 60 seconds to register and it might just save your life.”
