New rail station is (finally) on track

ROTHERHAM railway station has now re-opened with its £8.5m total revamp that was more than a year overdue.

The central station now boasts new lighting, lifts, a waiting room and bigger and better passenger information screens.

Work started in February 2010 and was due to be completed in December 2010 but took 18 months longer to complete in full.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening was at the station recently to perform the official opening ceremony.

The new-look station has security CCTV, a brand new ticket office and retail kiosk, with improved disabled access.

The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), has apologised for the long delay that a spokesman said was unavoidable and was caused in the main by issues with sub-contractors.
