My View, Ros Jones: College construction is set for summer
Our journey to bring a new standalone sixth form for 16- 19-year- olds in Doncaster is now gathering a pace.
Choosing the right place to learn is such an important decision for young people to make and by developing a dedicated sixth form for the borough we are ensuring that students in the town have a greater choice to make.
It is some time since we announced our plans to do this and gathered the support of hundreds of families and students from across the borough. Now we are pleased to announce that New College Doncaster will open its doors to students in a state-of-the-art facility in Auckley in September 2017.
This is fantastic news for Doncaster families and provides students in the town with more options about how and where they continue their education.
For some students, at 16 they want to continue to study but the school environment is not the right place for them and a dedicated sixth form college offers them the opportunity to continue to learn in a place that is geared up for them.
Over the next few months we will be out and about in the town meeting with potential students and their families to talk about what will be on offer at New College Doncaster.
We will be at this year’s Doncaster Careers fair at the Dome on February 17 to talk about what is happening with the project.
This is a great opportunity for people to learn more about New College Doncaster, which will provide outstanding educational opportunities for young people from across the borough and will create a dynamic centre for post-16 learning, supporting achievement, aspiration and progression.
Our proposal for New College Doncaster received Government approval in 2015 and work is well under way with plans to lay the first brick in the summer of 2016 on the playing fields adjacent to Hayfield Lane.
We have an excellent track record of delivering Ofsted Outstanding education at New College Pontefract and we will be replicating this proven model at New College Doncaster.
Parents and students will have state-of-the-art facilities that they can be proud of along with superb equipment and resources including a purpose-built theatre, dance studio and modern science labs.
Parents of year 10 students who will be starting to make decisions about their sixth form education are encouraged to attend the event and speak to the New College Doncaster team about the 32 A-levels and vocational courses which will be on offer.
