My View, Michael Hart: Plenty to keep children busy in the school holidays

Well, we have had the hottest July day since records began, and we have also seen lots of lightning storms and rain.

The ever-changing weather can only mean one thing – the British school holidays are almost upon us.

As children count down the last days of the school year and teachers prepare for a well-earned break, families turn their minds to what they can do to fill the six weeks that lie ahead.

Thankfully, Doncaster is a great place to be in the summer and there is always a jam-packed events and activities programme of family fun.

Doncaster’s Right Up Our Street programme has lots going on including Balby by the Sea, a summer spectacular event on Saturday, August 15 at Woodfield Club.

They are bringing free family fun to the club with trapeze and aerial performers, stilt walkers, Punch and Judy and a magic show.

Events like this are a great way for people to get to know others in their area and, as this event is put on by the community for the community, it is a great showcase of what can be achieved when working together.

At The Dome, we have decided to bring the seaside to Doncaster. We are creating a real seaside atmosphere with a mini beach, donkey rides and other typical seaside activities.

Across the Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust venues, there will be lots of summer fun with swimming, skating and play zone events for under-12s.

The recently refurbished Adwick Leisure Complex will see families battling it out for the most number of strikes at our Kingpin bowling alley where eight full-sized lanes are available for people to get together with family and friends.

We will also host character visits – including the Gruffalo on Thursday, July 23, and some of our favourite Superheroes on Wednesday, August 19 – creative activities and much more to keep children and young people entertained and active throughout the whole six weeks.

Just down the road, Lakeside Village has a weekend programme of events organised and we are pleased to be working with them to deliver some of their family fun.

And do not forget Doncaster’s Yorkshire Wildlife Park, recently named best business in the Sheffield City Region Business Awards.

This ever-growing walkthrough wildlife adventure park is worth a visit – you can easily enjoy a full day out and don’t forget this is the only place in Britain that you can see live polar bears.

So, with everything from community fun to seaside activities, polar bears to family swimming in the lagoons, and ice skating to trapeze and aerial performers, Doncaster is going to be a great place to be this summer.
