My View, Andrew Lorreto: Arts and entertainment for a weekeND

Doncaster is set to showcase its creative flair when professionals and community members come together to showcase a weekend of creative activities and events in collaboration with this year's St Leger Festival.

DNweekeND will turn three areas of the town into something magical for all the family from September 2 to 4.

The Waterdale Centre will become a Village of Dreams, the Market Place will be a Market of Marvels and the Mansion House the House of Sounds.

We are really looking forward to this cram-packed weekend of creative events and what is fantastic is that so many members of our local Doncaster community have been involved in bringing this together.

We’ve recruited local people from communities across the town to take part in a wide range of artistic events – including many who are new to the arts.

This will be our third DNweekeND and this year Right Up Our Street is aiming to put on a festival of dreams.

The three-day event will begin with an appearance from Doncaster’s legendary Great Big Donco on September 2 – a giant animated puppet created by local communities for this year’s Yorkshire Festival.

We want to create a real sense of fun and awe so that everyone from the young to the old from any community in Doncaster feels that they can come along and enjoy a performance.

The three days will showcase a wide variety of diverse and inspirational indoor and outdoor performances and interactive events for the people of Doncaster with enough variety to satisfy most tastes!

The common theme throughout will be community, creativity and curiosity.

C12-Dance will be coming to town on Saturday 3 with their part dance-part ballet- part outdoor spectacle.

Trolleys is a new ballet for five supermarket trolleys. Two meet and fall in love. One grapples to find a friend. Others revolt and ignite a dance of anarchy.

Our theme of inclusivity and diversity will be evident throughout all of the activities and we are really looking forward to seeing Rita Marcalo and her Dancing With Strangers: From Calais to England.

Passers-by will see a woman on the street with outstretched arms and a t-shirt that says ‘Dance with me’ and the question is will they accept her invitation?

There will be painters in the street and poets, reading and creating pieces as part of the festival.

The amazing Vamos Theatre will be out and about with the Crimplene Crusaders.
