He was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition until he died on Thursday, December 15.

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out last week, and a police spokesman said Mr Flanagan's family are receiving support from specially-trained officers.

Jonathan Swift, 49, of Seaforth, Liverpool, was charged with attempted murder and criminal damage following the incident.

He appeared at Doncaster Magistrates' court on Thursday, November 17 where he was remanded into custody until his next appearance at court.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Detectives will consult with the Crown Prosecution Service in due course in relation to the initial charge."
