Romance could be set to blossom after a "Hot Italian looking guy" spotted by a mystery admirer on a South Yorkshire bus responded by saying he would love to take the woman on a date.

A lovestruck Sheffield woman launched her appeal to track down the man after sitting next to him on a rush hour bus.

The curly-haired brunette spotted the hunk on the number 95 Walkley bus and launched a plea to hunt him down through the pages of a national newspaper.

Now the man has responded - and says he is keen to take the "beautiful" girl on a date.

Writing in today's Metro Rush Hour Crush column, where "commuter cupids" can make contact with each other discreetly, he wrote: "Beautiful curly haired brunette on the 7.05am No. 95 bus in Sheffield. I can't help but smile when I see you.

"I'd love to take you out for a drink."

The woman launched her plea earlier this week, describing herself as the "Curly-Haired Brunette Who Was Sitting Next To You," and penning: "Hot Italian-looking guy on the 7.05am No. 95 bus in Sheffield.

"I saw you smiling. Can I tempt you to an after-work drink on Friday?"

It is not known whether the pair have managed to make contact yet.

Some readers thought the gesture was romantic and sweet - while others branded her a stalker and homewrecker.

Posting on Facebook Craig White wrote: "If this was the other way around, and it was a man doing this,he'd probably be arrested for stalking.

He added: "She's potentially a homewrecker ,as well as a lunatic".

Laura Marriott was equally dismissive and said: "Yep he'd be called a pervert! Who's to say this guy isn't already attached or married anyway?"

However, others came to her defence and Ashley Reed posted: "Everyone talking about her stalking she isn't stalking she's just looking for someone she likes it's not like she standing outside his house and following him home CHILL OUT."

Aaron Crothers added: "Metro have had a section in there paper for quite a few years called "rush hour crush" it's a country thing so could be from a train Newcastle to London or the number 57 knocking about in Leeds.. Great bit of fun that can match make so why not?"

According to the Travel South Yorkshire website, there is indeed a 7.05am bus which sets off from the junction of Barber Road and Sydney Road.
