It seems love is in the air for Doncaster residents who have been named the biggest consumers of romantic fiction in the country for the second year running.

Donny folk are getting hot under the collar reading more romance books than anywhere else in the UK, according to

South Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley and West Yorkshire’s Pontefract also appear in the Top 10 making Yorkshire the most romantic region in the UK.

And Doncaster also featured second on the list of the Top 10 most well-read towns and cities in the UK, according to the survey.

Marie Jenkinson, manager of Waterstones in the Frenchgate Centre said: “It’s fantastic that Doncaster is recognised, for the second year running, as the top town for sales of romantic fiction as identified by Amazon.

“Fifty Shades of Grey’ was a fantastic book for getting people into bookshops and back into a love of reading and one of our best selling books last year was Helen Fielding return to the Bridget Jones series ‘Mad About the Boy’.

“This second accolade for our town proves that Doncaster has retained it’s passion for reading, which makes us immensely proud.

“But it’s not all about the romance Our branch does sell it’s fair share of romantic fiction, but we are just as likely to have Dan Brown’s Inferno (our best selling book for 2013) at the top of the charts, or Alex Ferguson (2nd Diamond.”

But it seems there’s a fair few cynics amongst us.

Dominic O’Malley posted on Facebook “Well there isn’t any love on the streets of Doncaster, I’m guessing they use romantic fiction to ‘escape’ the harsh realities of living here.”

Claire Wildsmith posted “that just shows how much the ladies in doncaster are lacking in attention lol.xx”

Luke Bentley posted “All this proves its that Doncaster woman don’t get treated the way they deserve to be treated so they read about what a true loving and sexual relationship is like compared to the slum pickings of men on offer in this area”

Adem Hoog posted “Probably not if we’re all sat about reading rather than doing... If ever there was a town which needed a little love, this is it.”
