ISLE duo Rita Payne are another step closer to a performance at London’s 02 Arena after impressing judges in a national music competition last month.
The acoustic combo, comprising Rhiannon Scutt (22) of Epworth Road, Owston Ferry, and Pete Sowerby (22) of Sandtoft Road, Belton, performed at Sheffield City Hall in the regional stage of the Live and Unsigned Competition.
The band, which was formed just eight months ago by the two ex-South Axholme pupils, is now preparing for the semi finals at Huddersfield Town Hall on May 20.
Rhiannon told the Bells/Advertiser: “There were about 20 competitors – solos, full bands, opera singers, a real mix of talent – six acts were put through by the judges and then one was by the public vote, but luckily we were put through by the judges.”
Pete added: “The next stage is on May 20 so we’ve got tonnes of time to prepare. This is the area finals, which is really the semis because after this it is the finals at London’s 02 Arena. It’s the same format as before, we have got three and a half minutes to perform a piece combining our own song with a cover.
“We are trying a few things out, we haven’t got a definite plan of what we’re going to do just yet.”
The winning act will pick up £10,000 in cash plus another £10,000 publicity package.
The band are due to play tonight, Thursday April 5, at the Penny Farthing Hotel in Bawtry and also at The White Hart, Owston Ferry, on Saturday April 7, both at 9pm.
They have also been booked for Lincoln’s Cafe Portico on May 18 plus a folk festival near Harrogate in June.
