A horse has been rescued from a Doncaster ditch by firefighters after it became stuck in mud.

Three fire crews from Adwick, Askern and Aston fire stations were called out just before 7am this morning to West Lane in Sykehouse to discover the horse, named Herbie, up to his waist in mud.

Firefighters with the assistance of the owner and members of the public, dug a shallow banking and attached a sling to the horse to enable the crews to drag the elderly animal safely from the ditch.

Crews left the scene at around 9.30am.
