Homeless young people in Sheffield help raise £209.10 for their charity

The sun shone and the sausages sizzled at a fundraising barbecue event, raising an incredible £209.10 for Sheffield's youth homeless charity, Roundabout.

Roundabout has been providing shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16-24 for almost 40 years now. They have various services which aim to reduce youth homelessness in the city and a hostel for 27 young people, located in the Highfield area.

Back in May, the residents invited a small amount of supporters to a coffee morning at the hostel, where they sold homemade cakes and served tea and coffee to their guests. Organised by a hostel support worker, Dawn Charlesworth, not only did this event raise some funds for the charity but it allowed the supporters to see ‘behind the scenes’ and get a better idea of how Roundabout is helping young people at the hostel. This week, some of the young people wanted to open up to hostel and thank more of the charity’s supporters by inviting them to a fundraising barbecue supported by leading training provider, Interserve Learning and Employment.

“The coffee morning was hugely successful, and really gave people an idea of how their support directly helps young people in Sheffield,” explains Dawn, who organised the events.

“We’re so glad to have been able to do a similar event again and are extremely grateful that so many of our supporters came along. We’d also like to say a huge thank you to Interserve for helping make the event such a success!”

Interserve is dedicated to help schemes which have a positive impact on wider communities and local economies. The Sheffield branch of Interserve worked with the charity to organise the event and on the day, their hospitality trainers worked with the young people at the hostel and taught them culinary skills.

“The incredible work that Roundabout does is something we were keen to get involved with”, explains Thomas Moore, Interserve’s Careers Development Officer.

“It was great to see first-hand how the young people at the hostel are thriving and we’re delighted to have been able to help make the event a success”.

The event was enjoyed by regular supporters of the charity, including Taylor Shaw, Armadillo Storage and team members from the Youdan Trophy as well as Councillor Jayne Dunn.
