Mums to be can now experience a water birth thanks to the new facilities on offer at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals.

Lady Julia Cumberlege who wrote a pioneering report on maternity services visited the maternity services facilities at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and officially opened the trust’s birthing pool.

The reopening of the newly named birth spa means that women who wish to use the facility to help with pain relief while in labour will be able to do so in more comfort and even greater safety.

The birth spa room at DRI has been totally redesigned and upgraded with air conditioning, birthing aids and advanced resuscitation equipment.

Lady Cumberlege was also shown around the whole of DRI’s maternity services department and met staff and patients to hear their views on maternity care.

Women giving birth in Doncaster have also benefitted from the creation of several en-suite single rooms with their own showers at Bassetlaw Hospital that women can use either before or after their babies are born.

The trust’s healthy lifestyle midwives have also attracted national acclaim for their work on caring for mothers with lifestyle problems, particularly weight-related.

Deirdre Fowler, head of midwifery and general Manager of women’s services at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Lady Cumberlege accepted our offer to visit us and see the fantastic work and facilities that we can now offer the people of Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

“In the trust around 5,500 babies are born each year and we are very proud that so many women choose to give birth in our maternity units or to opt for home births with our midwives.

“Our whole philosophy is to ensure that each woman experiences the highest standard of care and has the best possible experience while under our care.

“These exciting developments have significantly enhanced facilities for those women who choose to birth their babies at DRI and Bassetlaw Hospital.”
