Doncaster has been named one of the best places in the country for diabetes care.

Latest figures released by the National Diabetes Audit have placed the town in the top five in England for dealing with patients with Type 2 diabetes. Data collected from primary and secondary care organisations on each of the nine key care checks for people with Type 2 diabetes, saw Doncaster ranked fifth in the country out of 151 primary care trusts.

In Doncaster, 67 per cent of 17,500 patients had received all nine checks.

The checks, recommended by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence, include eye screening, foot examinations, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose monitoring, weight, urine testing, kidney function and a smoking review.

Dr John Hosker, Consultant Physician for Diabetes at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals, said: “These figures are very pleasing and it is very much a whole health community success.

“Achieving 89.7 per cent up take of the eye screening has certainly gone some way towards our health community reaching the top five.

Dr Nick Tupper, Chair of NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “This is an excellent example of GP practices and our local hospital trust working together.”
