Childhood obesity to be tackled

CHILDREN as young as four as set to join ‘fat camps’ in Thorne in a bid to tackle the escalating obesity problem.

The free camps that will start running at Trinity Academy from Saturday, January 22, will be open to children aged four to 17 who are concerned about their weight to attend with a parent or carer.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the clubs’ programme is invited to attend a free taster session this Saturday at the Church Balk school which is taking place between 10am and noon.

It is hoped the camps, that are being run as part of a £500,000 programme to tackle the weight problem across Doncaster, will be a good way to kick start the New Year, meet new friends, take part in fun activities and learn about healthy lifestyles.

Carnegie Weight Management (CWM) Clubs, funded by NHS Doncaster, will run every weekend for 12 weeks.

They will be followed by a 12 week follow up which will include exclusive online access to a member’s site.

The scheme was been launched after Doncaster was named one of the most overweight towns in the country in a ‘fat map’ of the nation.

Health bosses anticipate the borough’s obesity problem could put a £92 million a year strain on the health service.

Dr Tony Baxter, director of public health in Doncaster, said: “We estimate that by next year the annual cost to the local NHS of treating diseases related to overweight will be nearly £92 million and we expect that figure to rise to over £98 million in 2015.”

The clubs will be held on Saturday afternoon from 1.30pm to 5pm.

Professor Paul Gately, Director of CWM Health, said: “We do not promote diets and boot camp activity, we offer a structured fun-based programme based on cognitive behavioural theory to make long lasting changes.

“It is a chance for club members to meet new friends and most importantly have fun and improve their confidence and overall happiness.”
