Haxey team is top of the pile

Kings Arms 2 Peacock Veterans 1

Kings Arms 3rds sit proudly on top of the Gainsborough Sunday League Division Three after a hard fought win against Gainsborough side Peacock Veterans.

The game was in doubt right up to kick off due to frosty conditions and the fixture was switched at the last minute to Haxey Playing Fields after the Westwoodside pitch was deemed unplayable.

Kings were swiftly into their stride, creating numerous chances which went unconverted and it was against the run of play that the visitors took the lead.

A cool finish from the Peacock centre forward followed a neat move and some lax defending.

However the hosts equalised following a bullet header from experienced stopper Mark Goodliffe and it seemed only a matter of time before Kings would take the lead.

As half time approached a close range finish from Darren Spry fired the home side into the lead and after the break the Kings again created chances but failed to add to their tally.

Spry missed a few chances and some last ditch defending kept the scoreline at 2-1.

Although the home side remained in control, Peacock looked dangerous on the break and the hosts were grateful to a backline marshalled by Goodliffe and Andy Aldridge.

Some intelligent wingplay from Eddie Trewick also kept opposition threats to a minimum.

The game was played out with both sides looking to add to the scoreline but the final whistle went with the Haxey side running out narrow victors.

And with King and Miller beating Walkeringham, the league looks to be an open contest with all three leading teams having tough games in the new year.

Man of the Match was Ewan Kershaw of Kings Arms.

Next game for Kings Arms FC is an away derby to Owston Ferry on Sunday, January 15.
