The investment will deliver upgrades to the line by the early 2020s, and comes in addition to the £400m investment in upgrades since 2014 on the London and Doncaster route. Moreover, the line will also benefit from the £5.7bn Intercity Express Programme which will deliver cutting-edge trains for the East Coast Main Line.

This new investment will see improvements to platforms, tracks, signals, junctions and the power supply to the route. Early work has already begun, with more significant work starting later this year.

Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy, who has been lobbying for improvements to the Goole, Snaith to Leeds railway line, said, “The Government’s latest announcement on the East Coast Main Line is very welcome news for commuters in our area.

“The £780m investment will bring increased capacity to the line, with 40 percent more seats an hour for long distance services.

“In addition to increased capacity, passengers will also have the comfort of the new state of the art trains that will be delivered through the Intercity Express Programme.

“Once again, this is very welcome news and I will, moreover, continue to campaign for improved services on the Goole - Snaith - Leeds line.”
