Gong for a church with ‘open arms’

A CHILD-FRIENDLY church received a national award for its welcoming ways on Sunday.

St Mary’s Parish Church at Wombwell was given the nationally recognised “Child Friendly Church Award” during Sunday’s morning service.

The Child Friendly Church Award Scheme was created to help churches consider how they welcome and integrate children and their families into the worshipping life of their church.

The congregation at St Mary’s are thrilled with their achievement, which they feel demonstrates their commitment to the younger members of the community, and to widening the appeal of their activities.

Rector at St Mary’s, the Rev Nigel Elliott, said: “We have worked hard at making our services welcoming and relevant to all ages, and are delighted to have been given this national award.

“We hope and pray that it will encourage more families to join us in our regular services.”

The accolade was presented by the Diocese of Sheffield’s Children’s Officer, Jenny Lambourne, at the service which also happened to be ‘Back To Church Sunday’, when people who may not have been to a service for a while are invited to pay a return visit.
