Gear up for Cyclo-Cross

Cyclists and enthusiasts from across the UK will bring pedal power with a difference to a South Yorkshire sports and leisure venue later this month for Doncaster’s first ever competitive Cyclo-Cross event.

Backed by British Cycling and Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club, the Cyclo-Cross event will take place at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday 22nd October, giving both professionals and amateurs the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Cyclo-Cross was originally developed in Europe in the early 1900s for road racers to remain fit during the winter season. Since then, the popularity of the intense sport has risen significantly, with some cyclists abandoning more traditional cycling races to become Cyclo-Cross specialists.

The unique sport features obstacles meaning that on many occasions riders must dismount, run with their bikes while navigating the obstruction and remount. Typical courses are 1.5 to 2-mile loops on a mix of paved and off-road surfaces.

Paul Robson, operations manager at the Keepmoat Stadium, said: “It’s an honour for us to be able to host such a unique event as it proves the Keepmoat Stadium offers championship standard facilities. We are all very excited to see the stadium and its grounds transformed into a Cyclo-Cross course.”

Chris Morrey, event organiser, added: “We chose Keepmoat Stadium as the surrounding land provides the perfect course for the range of cycling abilities we expect to welcome. We will be able to offer both off and on-road sections, with some tough hill climbs, too.”

The event for thrill-seekers will include more than 100 participants and four race categories – the under 12s, youths (up to the age of 16), veterans (40+ men and women) and the highly anticipated Senior/Junior class which is expected to attract some of the best cyclists the UK has to offer.

The event is free to attend for spectators with the first race starting at 11am.
