Figures reveal crime areas

THE top crime hot spots in the Dearne have been revealed, with shopping centres, market halls and even a hospital among the worst hit.

Figures available on South Yorkshire Police’s crime map website gives people the chance to see exactly what type of crimes are being committed on their street.

The latest show there were 175 crimes recorded in December 2011 in Mexborough, the largest of the Dearne towns.

However this was a drop on the previous month’s crime figures, which saw 233 incidents reported.

December’s crimes included four accounts of anti-social behaviour and one of criminal damage and arson at Montagu Hospital.

In the streets surrounding the police station on Adwick Road, there were seven crimes, including five for shoplifting.

The Market Hall and High Street area were also hit with four incidents of anti-social behaviour and one violent crime.

Elsewhere in the area, there were 18 recorded crimes at Parkgate Retail Park, 12 of which were shoplifting offences.

Elizabeth Street in Goldthorpe was a major crime hot spot, with 12 incidents recorded. This included eight shoplifting crimes.

The crime map is part of a Home Office initiative updated monthly to show the streets hit most by crimes and anti-social behaviour. Public buildings have been added for the first time this month.

From May, the maps will also include the option to see what happens to offenders. Visit for more details.
