Figures have exceeded expectations for the programme with 240 students signed up with and over 100 participating on the expedition.

All students across campus are invited to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh, pushing them to do new things and grow in confidence. There are three levels of programme you can do which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The main differences between them are the minimum length of time they take to complete, how challenging they are.

Michael Yates-Simpson (Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computer Science) participated in the DofE expedition and really enjoyed the experience stating, “I enjoyed the walk but particularly enjoyed the camping and cooking with my mates. We spent time round the campfire, we sang and just had fun. We also gained a lot of insight from the trek and even get rewarded for it.”

Stacey Blackwell (Student Activity Coordinator) stated, “This is the first year the college have delivered the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, exceeding the expectation of college and North Lincolnshire with just over 100 students completing their bronze award expedition.

“The award has brought out confidence in the students as they would never attempted to achieve the award let alone the expeditions. Students worked hard and pushed themselves to achieve the best out of the award and we have seen some fantastic team work and changes in the student’s individual development.

“It has been brilliant to see students preparing and planning  for their expeditions, fending for themselves, being independent cooking their own meals on a Trangia set, building their tents and planning entertainment to keep groups laughing and having fun throughout.

“The expeditions have also pushed the staff out of their comfort zones and have shown some great team work across several curriculum areas, all staff that supported the award have volunteered to support again next year and encouraging other area’s to get involved.

“Next year we will be offering the bronze and silver awards with the future aspirations of students achieving the gold award which could be presented at a royal location such as Buckingham palace.”

“In 2018, North Lindsey College became the latest college to commence delivering The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). The operational team in the Eastern locality of the North of England region have worked closely with the college, not only to train staff but also to help enrol Bronze Award participants on the programmes recording system, eDofE. Following a successful application to the DofE’s Diamond fund, students are being supported by resources to help them achieve their Bronze Award. With dedication from the college and support of newly trained staff it is hoped to give more young people a boost to help them achieve their DofE and develop their self-confidence.” Neil Forrest, Duke of Edinburgh, Operations Manager.
