FORMER teacher Brian Elliott “took his life in his hands” to bring his latest book to publication.
Brian’s new book, ‘Darfield and Wombwell Then and Now’, is his third illustrated venture in to local history, although his own teaching subject was originally geography.
In his glossy paperback, photographs that were taken years ago feature alongside modern scenes, to show clearly how the passage of time has shaped the South Yorkshire town and village.
Now retired, Brian said: “There are many very good voluntary groups working hard to promote the rich history of these areas, both of which have been somewhat under-rated through time.”
Brian will give an illustrated talk and sign books at an official launch tomorrow evening, June 15 from 7pm at Darfield Church Hall, when a small entrance fee to include light refreshments will raise funds for the Friends of Darfield Churchyard.
He added: “I have included quite a bit of editorial in the book, with photographs that in many instances show just how good the early photographers were.
“My work has extended over many years and sometimes I risked life and limb for it, snatching difficult photographs from the middle of busy high streets, but I am pleased with the result.”
Published by The History Press, the book, that is in full colour, is on sale now priced £12.99.
