‘Outstanding’ Ofsted result for academy

Staff and pupils at a Doncaster academy are celebrating after receiving an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted result.

Inspectors gave Rowena Academy in Gardens Lane, Conisbrough, top marks after being impressed with the quality of teaching, achievement of pupils, and leadership and management.

The report said: “Children demonstrate very high levels of independent learning. There is no ‘glass ceiling’ for children at this school.”

Speaking about the leadership and management at the school, the report stated: “The principal has an outstanding vision for academy’s work and all staff work together to achieve this aim.

“This is very evident in the excellent environment for learning and exemplary policies and procedures to guide the academy’s work.”

Inspectors said to improve further, the academy could build on pupils’ already very good skills in the use of computers.

Principal Michelle Benton said: “This is a tremendous achievement.

“I would like to thank all the staff for their tireless hard work, commitment and dedication to the children and families of Rowena, without whom, none of this achievement would be possible.”

Councillor Christine Mills, chair of governors, added: “We are delighted that the Ofsted inspectors recognised the excellent dedicated work of all the team at Rowena Academy.”

The inspection was the first at the school since it converted to an academy in 2011.
