Ealing Trailfinders v Doncaster Knights: Humberstone set for first start
Doncaster Knights fly-half Simon Humberstone is finally set to make his starting debut for the club at Championship level this weekend.
With Declan Cusack suffering concussion in the derby win over Rotherham at the weekend, Humberstone is set to partner the in-form Michael Heaney in Saturday's game at lowly Ealing Trailfinders.
“It’s been a very frustrating season for me having suffered a serious shoulder injury after just 20 minutes of our first pre-season game,” said Humberstone this week.
“There’s never a good time being out injured but the worst time has to be when you’ve just joined a new club and you are eager to impress.
“I think fly-half was a bit of a problem position for the club last year and I think Declan and myself were brought in to try and improve things but we both found ourselves injured in the first half of the season and the club had to play the likes of Michael Heaney there and to be fair they did a good job.
“Declan, as was always going to be the case, was the first to return to full fitness and he got the first chance to stake his claim and has done a great job of stabilising the team and really setting the standards in the No 10 shirt and the position is rightly his at the moment.
“I’ve been training hard since returning to fitness and playing whenever I’ve had the chance and it’s a case of whether I can take that chance.”
With Dougie Flockhart set to miss out, Humberstone is likely to be handed the kicking duties.
“I’d like to consider myself pretty solid as a goal-kicker,” he said. “I also pride myself on my defence and like to think that I control the game quite well and try and bring other people into the game that way as Declan has been doing.
“I’m probably a bit of a different player to Declan but we’ve both been brought to the club to do the same sort of job and hopefully I can do that.
“I think a test of player is to come into a side and fit in with how the team plays rather than the rest of the players having to adapt to you.”
