A Doncaster teenager has been spending his spare time throughout 2013 working on an amazing challenge: to raise £2013 during the year 2013 for Arthritis Research UK.

Liam Hackett, 13, was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis when he was eight years ago and has since suffered chronic symptoms including painful and swollen joints, especially in winter.

After being hospitalised in December 2012 with a series of life-threatening infections, Liam bounced back and set himself this unique challenge in support of Arthritis Research UK, the charity leading the fight against arthritis.

Liam is well on his way to achieving his ambitious target, and now over two thirds of the way to reaching it, with the help and support of supporters, including his school, The Hayfield School.

Over the next few weeks, Liam is organising a bake sale on Wednesday 2nd October, and then to mark National Arthritis Week from the 7-13th of October, Liam’s year group will be going to school in orange coloured fancy dress, the colour most associated with Arthritis Research UK.

Arthritis Research UK Regional Fundraising Manager, David Fisher says: “Arthritis is the biggest cause of pain and disability in the UK with one in six people of all ages affected by this debilitating disease.

“Liam is an inspiration to us. His positive and selfless attitude is amazing, and we really appreciate his fantastic fundraising efforts, and also the support he is receiving from his school to help him achieve his target.”

Over 10 million people in the UK live with the pain and disability caused by arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Arthritis can affect people of all ages, having a devastating impact on their quality of life.

Arthritis Research UK receives no government funding, and the money Liam is raising will go towards funding the charity’s pioneering research into the cause and treatment of arthritis.

Liam has also set up an online fundraising page, so if anyone would like to help him reach his target you can do so at
