The young left back’s exit from Bolton Wanderers came as something of a surprise to Trotters fans - and hasn’t gone down too well with a fair few of them on social media.

After making his first team bow at the end of last season, Garratt had been earmarked by many onlookers at Bolton as one who could flourish following their relegation to League One.

But the 19-year-old defender, who hails from Lincoln, says the time was right for a change.

“Everything feels like it’s on the up here at Doncaster, not like where I was,” said Garratt.

“I got a call from my agent when I was in Spain and I came straight back to talk to the manager. Everything looked positive, and the manager knew exactly what he wanted from me and where he wanted me to fit in.

“We’re looking to push for promotion and I wanted to be part of that.

“I think the move came as a bit of a surprise to everyone apart from me really.

“I’ve thanked everyone at Bolton. The fans there were great. But it was the right time to move on.”

Garratt will compete with Cedric Evina for the left back berth.

He said: “I’ve got a lot of pace and I like to get forward and get crosses in. I also like defending one on ones and stopping crosses. I’ve played more in a back four but if I’m asked to play in a five I’m confident I can do that job.”
