Rovers released a statement today revealing the 36-year-old’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent.

The former skipper has not featured in the first team under new boss Darren Ferguson and made what turned out to be his last Rovers appearance against Swindon in September.

Ferguson insisted last month that Jones was being nursed back to full fitness after a catalogue of injury problems over the last few seasons - but it is understood Jones was told around the turn of the year that his services were no longer required.

Jones, who joined Rovers in 2012 from Sheffield Wednesday, will always be synonymous with the club’s promotion from League One in 2013 for the influential role he played as both skipper and joint caretaker boss with Brian Flynn.

He since made a success of managing Rovers’ Under-21s side and helped the likes of Harry Middleton and Mitchell Lund graduate from the youth ranks to the first team.

However, his stint in temporary charge of Rovers’ first team earlier this season, following Paul Dickov’s sacking, was much less successful - managing just one win from seven games.

Jones wanted the job on a full time basis but missed out to Ferguson after a lengthy recruitment process.

Rovers said in a statement: “The Club would like to thank Rob, who scored 11 goals in 78 appearances, for all his hard work and commitment during the previous three and a half years and wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”
